USING OFFSET LOCKS

More Reasons to Use Offset Valve Locks

We all know how handy offset locks can be when setting up valve springs, and here are a couple tips regarding using them. With heavy spring pressures, I’d recommend against using positive height offsets, as you lose some support at the keeper groove, possibly allowing it to flex or break there. Negative height offsets can actually give more stem support and enable you to use stronger locks without lash cap reliefs. On 7° stamped lock applications with lower spring pressures, I’m not as worried about tip flex. This allows you a range of -.060″ to +.050″ installed heights. While it’s great to be able to set up the springs with a standard or negative height lock, I install an added height lock for flat tappet cam break-in to reduce spring pressure. It’s a really easy swap compared to removing seals and spring seats to get to the shims.  This also allows you the ability to quickly change spring pressure when testing to troubleshoot tuning issues. Just be sure to have enough yield at max lift.
