Checking the transmission mounting surface or timing cover alignment with the crankshaft centerline is often overlooked and easy to do. This surface interface can cause a number of problems, including transmission pump, converter, stator, clutch, and crank thrust issues on the back, and timing cover/gear drive, seal, or pump issues on the front. I use my 2-inch precision bar with the main bore rings, a positive stop to the rear main bulkhead, and a magnetic base dial indicator. The bore-tru spacers actually work nicely. It’s also very easy to do on the line-boring machine, with the boring bar in place and locked to the riser with collars. Simply use a mag base indicator to sweep.
