Here’s an easy way to precisely align or clock a boring tool in a boring head. You’ll need a dowel pin the same size as the tool shank to fit the boring head, a 1/4″ thick x 1/2″ aluminum flat bar, and a 1-1/2″ x 1/2″ aluminum flat bar, though the size is not critical. Install the tool and dowel pin as shown. Hold the 1-1/2″ wide flat bar against the tool shank and dowel pin (red arrow pic 3). Place the 1/4″ thick flat bar against the 1-1/2″ wide flat bar (green arrows). Align the tool’s cutting face so it lies against the 1/4″ thick flat bar (blue arrow). Tighten the tool set screw. Remove the dowel pin. It’s OK if the wide bar must be leaned out to accommodate the 1/4″ thick bar between the tool face and the wide bar, as long as the lower edge of the wide bar is held against the dowel and tool shank.
